We have talked extensively about the dreams you have while you sleep, but what about the dreams that keep you awake? When we speak of dreams in the biblical sense, we are not solely referring to the visions you get at night. We also mean a powerful, burning desire planted inside of you to accomplish something specific in this life.
In discussions on "The Truth" podcast with Evangelist Mapuranga and Apostle Batsirai Java, the concept of a "dream" stretches beyond sleep. When God calls us, He doesn't always use a booming voice from the sky. Often, He approaches us by birthing a picture in our minds and a deep hunger in our hearts. His desire becomes our desire. Here is how to cultivate, protect, and birth the vision God has given you.
Let the Dream Capture You
The Hebrew word for "dream" found in Genesis 37 (the story of Joseph) literally translates to "to bind firmly." A true God-given dream ties you to it. You don't have the dream; the dream has you.
From a Wish to a Hunger
Dreams don’t always arrive like lightning. Often, they start as a mere wish or a passing thought. But as you pray and meditate over that thought, it grows into an insatiable hunger. Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." Without this internal fuel, you will walk in circles your whole life.
Dare to Desire
Philippians 2:13 says, "For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." If you are submitted to Christ, God actually uses your natural desires to reveal His will. When Jesus met the blind man (Mark 10:51), He asked, "What do you want me to do for you?" If you don't know what you want, God cannot bless it.
Dreams Are for Every Area of Life
Don't limit your dreams to "church work." God put a dream in Joseph’s heart to become a masterful politician and businessman, and through that, he saved Egypt from starvation. If you can imagine it, you can have faith for it. And where there is faith, God moves!
The Power of Writing It Down
Just as Apostle ABJ teaches you to write down your night dreams immediately so you don't forget the details, you must write down your life's vision so you don't lose direction.
The Harvard/Yale Study
An extensive study at Harvard and Yale once asked students about their goals. Only 3% had clear, written goals. 10% had goals in their minds, 60% had vague dreams, and 27% had no idea. Twenty years later, researchers found that the 3% who wrote down their goals had a combined net worth greater than the other 97% combined!
A Contract With Your Destiny
When you transfer your plans from your mind to paper, you are making a contract with yourself. In God's eyes, it acts as a prayer and a dedication. You must make the vision plain, keep it where you can see it daily, and constantly speak it over your life until it becomes spiritual substance.
Beware of the Dream Killers
God created man to conquer life through the power of dreams, but there are enemies designed to crush your imagination before it can manifest.
1. Past Experiences & Condemnation
Have you failed before? The enemy will use past setbacks to make you afraid to dream again. Worse, he will use condemnation to whisper, "Who are you to achieve something so great?" You must reject this. God is for you; you must have confidence in Him and in yourself.
2. Your Environment & Other People
You may live in a social environment built on invisible walls of limitation, where people tell you, "This is just how things are." Furthermore, when you share your big dream, mockers will question it. Remember: God gave the dream to YOU, not to them. They cannot understand what they have not seen. Like Joseph's brothers, dreamers are often mocked in the beginning but praised in the end.
3. Caution
Dreams must be bold. If they are entirely safe and predictable, they are just ordinary plans, not divine visions. Raise your appraisal of what God can do through you, and dare to think big!
Testing and Committing to the Dream
"For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost?" — Luke 14:28
Testing the Dream
Before you run with it, test it. Is it free from sin? Do you genuinely desire it? Ask the Holy Spirit for a confirming scripture to ensure God is backing it.
The Price of Greatness
Halfhearted attempts will lead to failure. You must give everything you have to the dream. The bigger the dream, the bigger the price you have to pay. We don't have to ask if it's possible (because God can do all things); the only question is, are you willing to pay the price? Success derives 90% from attitude and 10% from ability. If you have the attitude, God will supply the ability!
"Thank you, Lord Jesus, that You are the origin of dreams, the true dream-maker. Deliver my mind and faith to start dreaming bigger. I commit myself to be a person who pursues divine vision. I decide today that I will no longer walk in circles, but head forward. Holy Spirit, be the brush on the canvas of my heart. I confess myself to be a dreamer in Jesus' name! Amen."
